For thousands of years, human beings have been living in predominantly patriarchal, male-dominated societies in which the yang values of the masculine have been championed at the expense of the yin values of the feminine. This fundamental imbalance has manifested in a world characterised by escalating violence, warfare, environmental destruction, inequality and poverty.
It has been said by a number of indigenous elders that if our world is to change for the better, then that change will be led by the carriers of life, women, who are stepping up, empowering themselves and reclaiming their right to speak out in the public sphere on behalf of themselves and all of life.
To support women in this process of self-empowerment, Caroline Carey has created a collection of SHE workshops for women-only groups. The overarching purpose of these workshops is to create a safe space in which women can begin to explore and understand together who they are as women and what it is they wish to birth into the world. Women understand women; they understand the unique and particular challenges faced by women in taking their place in the world; they are therefore well-placed to support one another to look honestly at their own shadows in order to continue to learn and grow.
Keeping the space women-only allows something different to arise than is possible in a mixed setting. Without men present, women may find it easier to speak their truth and take their place in the group. They are able to explore the wounds they have in relationship to other women such as competition, distrust, fear of not being good enough, lack of support. It also enables women who have experienced abuse or trauma in relationships with men to feel safe enough to begin to heal those wounds with the support of other women.
